Beyond Reasonable Doubt by Robert Dugoni
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have a confession to make. Not very long ago, I threw in the towel on NetGalley. Not because of anything the service had done, but because I had such a backlog that I’d never, EVER catch up. When I started with NetGalley, it was easy to get carried away. So many books that looked interesting and all I had to do was write a review! But after a few years of requesting everything that looked good, I was in a hole I couldn’t get out of. The guilt was real. A year or so ago, I deleted my account and gave myself a break from reviewing. I didn’t post on my review site, or Goodreads, and posted almost solidly ratings on another site so I could keep track of my reading. Now I’m back and am winning using the service moderately.
Why am I saying all this? Because Beyond Reasonable Doubt was one of those books that I was given but didn’t read and review. That was another issue that killed my self-control; publishers sending me invites to books I wanted to read. How do I turn that down?
Like the first Keera Duggan book, Her Deadly Game, I got caught up in the case immediately. I also figured out who did it and partially why by around 35% but there were plenty of twists and turns and drama to keep me invested.
Books like this are why I continue to read Robert Dugoni, even after being disappointed in the past. In Beyond Reasonable Doubt, we’re mostly focused on the case and the unraveling of the who-dun-it. But there’s a lot more going on. We get to see more of the Duggan family dynamics, more of the relationships between Keera and the detectives and PA’s office (Prosecuting Attorney), and more of Keera growing into her role as defense attorney. I felt that it was pretty well balanced, and I never lost sight of the case, no matter what else was going on.
Now I’m going to start reading the ARC of #3, Her Cold Justice. It’s not out until January 2026 but I’ll post my review on Goodreads and schedule it for release day on my website. You’ve got plenty of time to start from the first book if you haven’t jumped into this series.
So, even though my old NetGalley account has been deleted, I offer thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for giving me an ebook copy of Beyond Reasonable Doubt.
