Dark Sisters: A Tale of Empowerment Across Centuries

Dark Sisters by Kristi DeMeester

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a ride! This one hooked me right from the start and didn’t let go.

It could get a little frustrating initially when switching between the time frames but once the connections started coming together, I enjoyed going back, and back further, and then to the current era. We’ve got a mom and daughter in 1751, a mom with a daughter in 1953, and a privileged preacher’s daughter in 2007. And each story is sort of heartbreaking. But also empowering.

Here’s the blurb:

In this fiercely captivating novel, horror meets historical fiction when a curse bridges generations, binding the fates of three women. Anne Bolton, a healer facing persecution for witchcraft, bargains with a dark entity for protection—but the fire she unleashes will reverberate for centuries. Mary Shephard, a picture-perfect wife in a suffocating community, falls for Sharon and begins a forbidden affair that could destroy them both. And Camilla Burson, the rebellious daughter of a preacher, defies conformist expectations to uncover an ancient power as her father’s flock spirals into crisis.

Three women. Three centuries. One legacy of fury, love, and a power that refuses to die.

While each of the women were dealing with very different circumstances, the overriding theme is fighting against the limitations/gender roles assigned to women by men. There’s also an interesting Christian cult angle that helps to facilitate the above mentioned gender roles and expectations.

I’m not going to get too far into any details because it’ll be more fun for you if you just jump on in. I do want to share how enjoyable the author’s writing style is. DeMeester, along with having a fun-to-say last name, is also a wonderful writer.

So if you’re looking for an epic tale of women taking charge of their own futures – no matter the consequences – grab Dark Sisters.
